The newly added AT4X is off-road focused and rugged, with electronic-locking front and rear differentials, a special 2-inch suspension lift, advanced spool-valve dampers, extra skid plates, and chunkier off-road tires mounted on black 18-inch wheels. The Sierra 1500 handles remarkably well due to responsive steering and restrained body roll.
The upgraded interior is where the changes for 2022 are most impressive. Most models integrate a fully digital 13.4-inch touchscreen and integrated infotainment system alongside a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, as well as built-in Google software that allows access to its app store, maps, and voice assistant. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 continues to offer several different powertrain combinations, as it is available with four different engines, two different transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel drive. The base setup is a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder that makes 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are two V-8 options: a 355-hp 5.3-liter and a 420-hp 6.2-liter. The six-cylinder diesel engine produces 460 pound-feet of torque. The Sierra 1500 also can be fitted with adaptive dampers and wheels as large as 22 inches.
